Recently had childbirth in the family? Or about to welcome a newborn?. Here is a ready reckoner for some auspicious dates concerning various ceremonies for the newly born.
NamkaranSanskar (Naming the Baby)
The auspicious dates for Namkaran are the 12th, 16th, 20th and 22nd day from the birthday of the child. To further select a day, one can choose the 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 10thtithi of the lunar month, could be either Shukla Paksha or Krishna Paksha.
Putting child into cradle
Days 10th, 12th, 16th, 18th and 32nd from the birthday are auspicious for putting a baby in the cradle for the first time. The following tithis should be avoided: 1st, 4th, 6th, 8th and 12th
Annaprashan (Giving cereal to the baby for the first time)
This ceremony is not preferred before six months of the birthday. This day should not be an Amavasya. After six months, Annaprashan can be done in the 6th, 8th and 10thmonth for male child and 7th, 9th and 11th month for the female child.
Karna Bhedan (Piercing the ear)
The 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th months from birth are preferred for Karna Bhedan. The suitable days are Mon, Wed, Thursday and Friday.
Mundan (Removing hairs)
The auspicious dates for Mundan vary for male and female children. For male children, even numbered months from birth are auspicious, while for female children odd numbered months from birth are auspicious.
Mundan should always be done in Uttarayan (broadly the period of Uttarayan is mid-Jan to mid-June). The mundan ceremony should be done after sunrise and before noon. Festival occasions should be avoided.
Vidyarchan (First time the child is given knowledge of Alphabets)
Vidyarchan or Viduabhyas is preferred to be done in a Saraswati or Shiva temple. Again it should be done in Uttarayan months and the time should be from Sunrise to noon. The 2nd, 3rd, 5th, 7th and 10thtithis are auspicious dates for Vidyarchan
Upanayanam (Yajopavit or Janeo) Sanskar
Upanayanam can be done only in Uttarayan months. For Brahmins, it should be done after the age of 8 years, for Kshatriyas, after the age of 11 years and for Vaishya, after the age of 12 years. Vasant Ritu is perfect for Brahmin, GreeshmaRitu for Kshatriya and Sharad Ritu for Vaishya.
